The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is calling for a regulatory overhaul to address the growing threat of social media defamation against manufacturers, while still upholding consumer rights. Segun Ajayi-Kadir, Director General of MAN, highlighted the urgent need for policies that shield manufacturers from the potentially devastating impact of false claims spread online.
“Unverified accusations on social media can irreparably damage a manufacturer’s reputation, even when products are proven safe and compliant,” Ajayi-Kadir stated. He urged government agencies to actively protect manufacturers, while also fostering responsible consumer behaviour.
A recent incident involving MAN member Erisco Foods underscored the need for such measures. A consumer complaint, later proven false by regulatory investigations, could have had severe consequences for the company. This case demonstrates the importance of thorough investigation and accountability for both manufacturers and consumers.
MAN acknowledges the right of consumers to voice grievances but emphasizes the need for accuracy and fairness. Spreading misinformation harms not only individual businesses but also the broader manufacturing sector, a crucial pillar of Nigeria’s economy.
To foster a thriving manufacturing industry, MAN advocates for:
- Stronger legal protections: Laws that deter false accusations and hold those responsible accountable.
- Proactive government support: Agencies should actively defend manufacturers against baseless attacks and promote consumer education.
- Consumer responsibility: MAN calls on consumers to verify information before sharing it online and to utilize official channels for complaints.
- Mutual respect: A collaborative approach between manufacturers and consumers is essential for a healthy economic ecosystem.
By balancing the interests of both manufacturers and consumers, Nigeria can create a climate that encourages investment, innovation, and sustainable growth in the manufacturing sector. MAN remains committed to advocating for policies that support this goal.
